Your Cat Isn't Ignoring You, Science Says It's Doing Something Sneakier

That blank stare when you call its name is not what you think.

You call your cat and it does absolutely nothing. Not a flick of the ear. You assume it is being rude. Researchers who study feline behavior have a very different read on that frozen little face.

Cats can absolutely recognize their own names. Studies show they distinguish their name from other similar-sounding words. The catch is that recognition and response are two entirely separate decisions in a cat's brain.

In the wild, ancestors of the house cat were solitary hunters who did not answer to a pack leader. Nothing in their evolution rewarded coming when called. Dogs got bred for it. Cats simply never signed that contract.

So the subtle ear twitch when you say its name is the acknowledgment. Your cat heard you, filed it away, and decided the couch was more pressing. It is not ignoring you. It is choosing you, on its own schedule.
