This Jellyfish Can Basically Reverse Its Own Aging And Never Truly Die

Scientists call it biologically immortal, and it is drifting around right now.

Every living thing gets old and eventually runs out of road. Except, apparently, one tiny jellyfish that decided the rules did not apply and figured out how to hit rewind on its entire life.

The species Turritopsis dohrnii, barely bigger than a fingernail, can respond to injury, starvation, or stress by transforming its adult cells back into an earlier stage, essentially reverting to a younger form of itself.

From that reset state it grows up all over again. In theory it can repeat this cycle indefinitely, which is why scientists describe it as biologically immortal. Not indestructible, just capable of dodging old age.

Predators and disease still catch most of them, so the oceans are not overrun. But the trick has fascinated researchers studying cell aging. A creature you could barely see may quietly hold clues we are only starting to read.
