This Is Why Certain Melodies Feel Like A Season Of Your Life

One tune plays and suddenly you are twelve again, standing in your old bedroom.

It only takes a few notes. A melody you have not heard in years drifts out of a speaker, and instantly you are transported, standing in a place you left long ago, feeling things you thought you had forgotten. Music does this like nothing else.

The reason is wiring. Sound and memory are close neighbors in the brain, so a tune from a certain era can drag the whole era along with it, smells and feelings and all. The song becomes a bookmark for a chapter of your life.

This is strongest for the music of our younger years, when everything felt enormous and new. Those songs got filed alongside first crushes and long summers, so hearing them reopens the whole folder at once, unexpectedly and completely.

So when a melody hits you like a wave, do not fight the flood. You are not being silly. You are time traveling on a soundtrack. Let it carry you back for a minute, then set you gently down in the present again.
