The Weird Reason Paper Cuts Hurt More Than 'Real' Injuries

A paper cut is objectively tiny. So why does it sting like your finger has been personally insulted?

First, location: fingertips are packed with more nerve endings than almost anywhere else on your body, because you use them to explore the world. A cut there hits a sensory hotspot.

Second, paper isn't the clean blade it appears to be. Under magnification its edge is ragged like a saw, and it tears through skin, leaving a messy shallow wound.

Finally, a paper cut is often too shallow to bleed much, so no protective clot forms. The exposed nerve endings stay open to the air — and complain every time you bend your finger.
