Great antagonists get to break rules the rest of us politely follow. Watching them do it is a safe, thrilling little rebellion by proxy.
They are also often the most honest characters, saying out loud the ambitions everyone else hides. That candor is weirdly refreshing.
None of this means you want them to win. It means a story is only as gripping as the obstacle, and a magnetic villain makes the whole thing sing.
