You'd bet money that a hard workout would leave you ravenous, wolfing down everything in sight. Yet sometimes it's the lazy, do-nothing days that leave you rummaging through the cupboards. What is going on with your rebellious appetite?

Appetite is far more complicated than a simple fuel gauge. It's tangled up with your hormones, your mood, your sleep and even boredom, which means it doesn't always line up neatly with how much energy you've actually used.

Interestingly, certain kinds of exercise can temporarily quieten hunger signals for a while afterwards, which is why you don't always feel like eating straight after. Meanwhile a restless, unstructured day can leave your brain reaching for snacks out of habit.

The takeaway isn't to game your appetite, it's to notice it. Are you actually hungry, or just bored and fidgety? Getting curious about the difference tends to serve you far better than trying to out-think your own stomach.
