The Hamster Was Supposed To Be 'Low Maintenance' — Then This Family Discovered What Happens At 2 A.M.

The pet store didn't mention the night shift. Now they can't unhear it.

On paper, the hamster was the perfect low-effort pet: small cage, cheap food, sleeps all day. The pet store failed to emphasize the 'all day' part — because what sleeps all day works all night, and this one works like he's paid overtime.

It starts around 11 p.m. with the wheel, which sounds gentle for the first hour and then, somehow, like a freight train by the third. Then comes the redecorating: bedding moved, bars tested, food bowl methodically flipped, an escape ladder attempted out of chew sticks.

The family cycled through solutions: a 'silent' wheel (a myth), relocating the cage to the living room (he got louder, seemingly offended), white noise machines for the kids. Meanwhile, daytime visitors see only a sleeping ball of fluff and ask why everyone looks so tired.

The finale: Dad, awake at 2 a.m. anyway, started watching the hamster work. Now he has a chair by the cage and provides commentary. 'He runs four miles a night to go nowhere,' Dad says. 'Honestly, I've never related to anything more.'
