For centuries, witnesses described glowing orbs the size of grapefruits drifting through the air during thunderstorms — sometimes even indoors — before vanishing or popping.
Science largely filed it under folklore, alongside sea serpents. The reports were too strange: floating fire that lasted seconds, wandered horizontally, and left scorch marks.
Then, in 2012, Chinese researchers studying ordinary lightning accidentally recorded a luminous ball with scientific instruments, capturing its spectrum for the first time — it contained elements from the soil.
That supports a leading theory: a strike can vaporize silicon from the ground, which burns slowly as a glowing floating orb. One of nature's oldest ghost stories is turning into chemistry.
