There is a scientific experiment that has been running for the better part of a century, and its entire purpose is to watch a single drop of goo slowly fall.

The substance is pitch, a tar-like material that looks and shatters like a solid but is actually an extraordinarily thick liquid that flows unimaginably slowly.

Set up in a funnel long ago, the pitch oozes downward so gradually that a single drop can take a decade or more to form and finally drop off the bottom.

For years, nobody had ever actually witnessed a drop fall in person, missing each one by sheer bad timing. It is proof that some of the most solid-looking things in the world are secretly on the move.
