A refuse collector knew his route by heart, right down to which houses always had their bins out. So when one usually reliable doorstep sat empty three collection days in a row, something tugged at him.

He mentioned it to his crew, who told him to leave it, not his job. But the feeling wouldn't shift. On the fourth week he knocked, then knocked louder, then peered through the letterbox and called out.
